A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's key government projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a significant expansion of its duties in civilian projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled significant questions over safety standards.
